Most people already living in Bali for an extended period of time know of the great white sushi haven sitting on Jl. Sunset Road, the place to go for an extraordinary culinary experience of Japanese dining and inventiveness beyond comparison. From the intricacies of sashimi tothe theatrical flair of Teppanyaki, the hallowed walls of Sushi Tei have combined a vast array of Japanese cuisine under one house making this an undeniable restaurant for patrons and lovers alike.

Originally debuting in Singapore in 1994, Sushi Tei expanded their reach to Jakarta in 2003, garnering the “Best Japanese Restaurant of Jakarta” award by Jakarta Java Kini magazine in 2006, and finally hit the shores and stomachs of Bali in September 2007. Boasting a generously sized facility with 8 VIP rooms available for dining, meeting, and small gatherings, an outdoor garden seating 68 people, and a hall with 150 seats that happens to be perfect for large gatherings and parties, Sushi Tei have the accommodations for any sort of event.

Their menu reads off like a holy book of Japanese gastronomy with every type of detailed dish under the sun. Creative sushi rolls, from the classics to their own take on the classics, pepper the menu along with an extensive list of Sashimi and Unagi delectables. Noodle and soup choices are abundant as well as rice dishes and the ever-popular Bento box selections to go along with main course meals that cure any hunger. An extensive drink list and specialized dessert choices round out the menu but party packs can also be available for catering as a set menu or served buffet style.

A Japanese dining experience is what one walks into once through the doors of Sushi Tei, their open-kitchen concept is noticeably centered in the middle of the restaurant with a Japanese Kaiten (conveyor belt) encircling the kitchen if one chooses to sit at the bar gazing upon the masters at work. Sushi Tei delivers above and beyond the norm providing Bali with a one-stop gateway through the world of Japanese cuisine.

Love affairs have always arrived in many shapes and forms, from the purple and orange hazed tones of a Bali sunset to the green shades of shimmering rice paddies that seem to mesmerize travellers, the undeniable power of our senses takes hold and won’t let go. Cuisine is no stranger either, some restaurants in Bali have a legendary mystique all their own, able to draw in guests time and time again with sumptuous aromas that wet taste buds from all over the world.

After a very long and storied rise to one of Bali’s culinary delights, the former owners of Kafe Warisan have transported their winning combination of 5-star French Mediterranean cuisine to a larger and more all-encompassing location in Petitenget now known as MÉTIS. Still providing the same level of service, class, and awe inspiring cookery, MÉTIS invites former Kafe Warisan patrons and newcomers alike to partake in this new multi-functional property.

Upon entry, the richly brown façade of MÉTIS gives way to a beautifully designed contemporary colonial style establishment. The melding of modernistic and traditional batik inspired Indonesian forms creates an aesthetically pleasing playground of architectural wonder. MÉTIS now welcomes guests with an art gallery and boutique with works from all over the Asian continent, a pastry shop serving fine delectables, an upstairs event room that can house large parties with its own dedicated kitchen, bar, and service, and of course the main attraction, the new 260-seat restaurant area complete with its own bar and lounge and private dining areas. This area in particular is moving due to the natural timbers and clean lines in its makeup while fans of dining under the stars and that gorgeous rice paddy view spread across the horizon, reminiscent of Kafe Warisan, need not worry as this pure environment trumps all.

Classically trained chef and owner Nicolas “Doudou” Tourneville has been a part of this conception from the start along with partner Said Alem. Guiding plates of flavourful dishes from kitchen to table has been their combination of success and continues again at MÉTIS.

The high-profiled team of chefs that Chef Tourneville has assembled offer a variety of original cuisine with starters like King Crab and Seaweed Ravioli with White Truffle Beurre Blanc and Grilled Fresh Japanese Scallops with Gratined Sea Urchin Sauce. Main courses feature dishes such as the Moroccan Lamb Rack Mechoui served with Pumpkin Couscous or Fresh Scallops and Prawns Provençal with Baby Roasted Potato, Asparagus, and Shimeji Mushrooms. Desserts include different pastries and inventions but none as heavenly as the Chocolate Soufflé, quite honestly the best on the island.

Private dining and wine celebration is unveiled with a new private cellar dining room as well that is literally walled with hundreds of various bottle selections from around the world. Tasting the fanfare of MÉTIS’ culinary choices while indulging in a multitude of wine options is complete with a personal butler and wine sommelier, a true fine dining experience.

MÉTIS is opened for lunch, dinner seating at 5PM, while the bar and lounge stays opened till 2AM. Also in the plans is their new daily high tea time, brunch on Sundays, and for New Years Eve, a set menu to ring in 2010 with style and grace that only MÉTIS knows how to deliver…let the festival of senses commence.

Keeping up with the latest award winning restaurant, KORI, Bali Plus accidentally met Mr. Max, the sales and marketing manager, who answered questions concerning the combination of modern and traditional cuisine that doesn’t leave out that genuine Balinese zest. The story behind this successful gastronomy business eminated from the outstanding teamwork of the KORI staff who have dedicated their life to provide an array of flavours and first class service to a worldly clientele. Staffed by a team of experienced and creative people, both local and expatriate, KORI redefines the art of cuisine and the concept of traditional luxury. Modern international cuisine in a traditional Balinese setting is the core value that won KORI the “Bali’s Best Restaurant” award for five times.

Max states that since its opening in June 1998, KORI has constantly attracted compliments and return guests who remain loyal to the unique experience of great food and friendly services in a laid back atmosphere. Born with a true Bali spirit, Made Jati, the founder, wanted to create an authentic Balinese setting to bring serene comfort to the heart of Kuta where guests of all nationalities can expect a restaurant with a dedication to service and a passion for quality food. The architecture is pure Balinese, and KORI has been cleverly constructed to accommodate everyone, whether in the large and spacious main area, or in one of the discreet hideaway corners – secluded dining platforms, covered by traditional alang alang roofs, with large, plump cushions.

KORI’s menu, served by a smiling and friendly staff, is a tropical blend of Western and Balinese dishes with an emphasis on flavour and natural ingredients as fresh local produce is used to create these stunning dishes. Together, the KORI chef and his team constantly experiment using their combined creative flair to successfully blend new ideas with traditional ingredients and methods. The menu also includes a special homestyle cooking section for homesick expatriates featuring such dishes as Fish and Chips and Bangers and Mash. Balinese dishes on the menu include Ikan Pepes (Grilled Snapper Fillet in Banana Leave with Balinese Spices) and Semur Daging (Indonesian Beef Stew with Balinese Vegetables) with Balinese bumbu (spice mix) and sambal mentah. Meanwhile, for the special menu, Grilled King Tiger Prawns served with potato wedges, tossed salad, and garlic butter is one of KORI’s signatures that comes highly recommended.

A lavish cocktail and drink list, including exotic potions, are available at KORI as well. First-grade quality local liqueurs such as arak (palm wine), brem (rice wine) and Bali moon liqueurs are just to name a few. Meanwhile, a range of international quality wines and champagne, imported beers, and specially blended coffees are another option to enhance and complete the dining experience. And for those who are looking for a more relaxing dining place, KORI has an air conditioning room which provides a billiards table and an extensive selection of Havana’s cigars and cognacs. With all of these inclusions, it’s no wonder that KORI is an authentic icon for an exclusive Balinese dining experience.

For nine years KU DE TA has been known to successfully entertain jetsetters from around the world and have been searched for by high-end guests from Bulgari and The Ritz. How did they do it?

Of course, the quality of food is always the main reason considering the sense of artistry in the preparation of its delicacies. Each course is always properly prepared and bats a home run each and every time. But KU DE TA knows best that restaurants are in the business of serving food to their customers. In other words, they are providing a product (food) and a service (waiting on the customer). KU DE TA defines the quality of food and service as meeting or exceeding the expectations of the customers as promised. Not only are people having excellent meals in KU DE TA, but they are also experiencing its impeccable level of service.

Do you remember the “Soup Nazi” episode on the Seinfeld television show where people lined up to have delicious soup, but the owner was extremely rude and would refuse to serve those who did not abide by his rules? Well, this is one example of bad service that you definitely won’t find at KU DE TA. At KU DE TA, guests are the most important people in the world. You will never hear the word “no”. And what’s even more impressive is that the waiters and waitresses at KU DE TA seem to know exactly what you want before you actually KNOW you want it. You might ask, is it really that good? You bet! It’s the KU DE TA vibe that they live and breath every single day.

Now, how can KU DE TA constantly manage to perform that high-level of service? Marcus Willson, KU DE TA’s Restaurant Manager, is one of people responsible for the consistency of this incredible vibe. “We inspire our staff to have a sense of humbleness and compassion, and constantly remind them of the important connection between attitude and professionalism”, Marcus said. The key to great service is making people feel comfortable. Marcus pointed out that, “It’s all about details. No details are spared, from lighting, music to personalising service. Every day we work on the basics, on making people feel comfortable. We work on small details over and over every day”. That’s what wins awards for great restaurants like KU DE TA. Be sure to experience KU DE TA’s infectious vibe, from their great food to the friendly staff. In addition, they have prepared new exciting dishes for you to sample like the Scampi Skargan, Crispy Soft Shell Crab, Miso Alaskan Black Cod ‘Nobu Style’, and the sweet Double Valrhona Mocha Chocolate Tart.

Will KU DE TA still be one of Bali’s best restaurants in the next decade? We can’t see a single reason why not, can you?

Paul’s Place, the landmark that was a five-year feature at Ku De Ta and The Oberoi corner on the now built up Jalan Laksmana, has moved its magic to Jalan Petitenget – as have some other well-established Bali-based names.

The magic is as visible as the blue Balinese sky and searing sun, for when you turn the corner at Villa Lumbung, the immediate swaying palms stand out against the backdrop of the tropically cool white recently redesigned Paul’s Place building. Officially opening this month, Paul has kept his successful and established three-in-one concept that is Meng’s Lifestyle Village. It incorporates an exclusive boutique experience – In Full Swing (with sizes up to XXXL), the original M Spa – now also with a bar, and the roof top dining place known as the Cloud Lounge.

Cloud Lounge is not a misnomer, one feels at peace with the Balinese gods along with a stunning 360-degree panorama across this enchanting island. Views onto the seven volcanoes, including sacred Gunung Agung to the northeast, as well as the seascape to the south over an array of treetops is something that money cannot buy outside of Paul’s Place. However, money will and can buy you a delicious selection of dining experiences.

Commence your experience, after a relaxing massage, with a ‘Blue Berry Lychee Martini’, a ‘Sea Breeze’ or a more classical, cooling glass of wine at Cloud’s intimate and inviting lounge area. This is wonderfully coupled with some tapas such as the ‘Asian Tuna Salad’, ‘Vietnamese Fresh Spring Rolls’ sauced up with a zesty dressing or a succulent ‘Mixed Satay’ along with the ubiquitous peanut sauce.

Dining should be an easy experience under the heavens, candlelit, with Ella Fitzgerald as company, perhaps, and an angelic looking staff on full attendance to satisfy your every culinary whim. The menu is as light as the cotton candy clouds above, yet with an Asian twist, to keep you floating on after the après dinner Cognac. Paul’s Place Jalan Petitenget is a true box of magical surprises on the street of the same name.
